So I was starting a post built around how Hamas is rejecting the Arab Initiative because they think Obama will offer them something better. But now I’m worried that my concerns about Obama’s Middle East policy – a disaster in the making that stems from the relatively precise institutional forces which shape the foreign policy left’s breathtaking myopia – are getting mixed up with conspiracy lunacy like this:
Editors and staff working for local Jewish papers that have run articles critical of Obama have been receiving hostile phone calls… these phone calls typically warn against running any further critical articles of Obama “now that he is President”, emphasize that most Jews voted for Obama and emphasize that “we must unite behind him” or there may be “consequences to our community.”… The way is being cleared for Obama to take power and begin the destruction of Israel. Silence only serves his agenda. Blogs have an independence that the print media does not have… We can speak out and join our voices together against the growing night.
I suppose it’s beside the point to note that the Jewish blogosphere hasn’t exactly been an insurmountable threat to Obama’s agenda. The conspiracy theorist would breathlessly insist that this justifies Obama’s campaign to prevent a genuine tidal wave of dissent. You know – the same kind of thing that caused Cheney to lock up those anti-war activists in his gulags. Just ask them about it. They’ll show you their scars.
How about everyone take a deep breath and remember that Obama and his advisers are merely cataclysmically mistaken about the historical forces and ideological pathologies that make political Islam an existential threat to the West? Because that’s pretty bad. And – in sharp contrast to conspiracy mongering – it has the upshot of not being embarrassing bullshit.
The foreign policy left’s anti-war Code Pink supporters: definitely not on our side and very likely on the other side. Them it’s fair to say that about. The President-elect of the United States – not so much.
