Remember UN General Assembly President Miguel d’Escoto Brockmann? Ahmadinejad railed against Israel from the floor of the UN General Assembly. He thew around anti-Semitic rhetoric – filth, “cesspool,” etc – of a type that hadn’t been heard in international forums since the height of Nazi Germany. It was Brockmann who hugged him right afterward, before explaining that Ahmadinejad is merely an anti-Zionist who wants Israel destroyed not an anti-Semite who wants Jews destroyed (as if the former won’t involve a good deal of the latter, or as if the UN General Assembly President should be embracing someone who wants to wipe out a UN member state). But isn’t that just the kind of thing you’d expect from an anti-Western, pro-Iran revolutionary:
He remained deeply invested in Nicaraguan affairs, joining the so-called Group of Twelve establishment figures who supported Ortega’s revolution. When the Sandinistas succeeded… d’Escoto was named foreign minister…
d’Escoto was unsparing in his assessment of US foreign policy, particularly with regard to governments it doesn’t like – whether Nicaragua’s in the 1980s, or Iran’s today. “If there is anything absolutely certain, it’s that the United States has never wanted democracy – it’s a different lexicon… they mean it is an obedient country.”…
There are material reasons for d’Escoto… to be warmly inclined toward Iran: The country has promised significant investments in Nicaraguan infrastructure… “He thinks Iran and its leaders identify with them as leaders who are trying to change the status quo, who superficially have a lot of common ideals, interests and practices – he’s fooled by that,” said Victor Comras… “[Maybe] he will educate himself along the way”
A little education might not be a bad idea for a guy who’s “fooled” by the charm of an anti-Semitic genocidal lunatic. In a different universe, a UN General Assembly President would have to know something about countries that he’s condemning or praising. So before he made statements like “Iran isn’t anti-Jewish” he would hav eto know something about how Iran treats Jews. In our universe the qualifications seem a bit different:
D’Escoto told the Post that the US had proved itself willing to go “bomb, blast a country out of existence, to blast it to death for not fulfilling the resolutions of the Security Council” with regard to Iraq, and accused the US of resorting to propaganda against countries like Iran. Yet he appeared uninformed on the specifics of Iranian policies, asking this reporter: “I don’t pretend to be infallible, but I don’t perceive that, for example, from Iran, that they would be anti-Jew. I understand there is quite a big, sizable Jewish population in Iran, and that there’s no problem with them. Is that true?”
No, obviously it’s not even close to true. They’re actually insane pathological anti-Semites:
They claim that The Protocols does not belong to them, but there are many documents and many reliable people who have determined that it indeed belongs to the Zionists… The precise date of the The Protocols is unknown. It is from the late 19th century, when the Czar’s regime attacked a gathering of Jews in Russia, and The Protocols fell into their hands.
The discovery of America by Christopher Columbus was made possible due to the money of the Jewish aristocrats, who were searching for the Promised Land, which they initially thought would be in America. They even consider New York to be their No. 1 Promised Land. Interestingly, the number of New York Jews is equal to their number in Tel Aviv.
It’s too bad that Israel refuses to build things for the home countries of UN leaders. Then the UN could shift from obsessively condemning Israel for security measures and counterterrorism ops and retaliations to acts of war. They might even free up some time for a few of the things they’ve been leaving on the back burner. Like Palestinian terrorism, which they can’t bring themselves to condemn even when schools get shot up. Or like Darfur, where Sudan is now attacking refugee camps. Or like Zimbabwe, where Mugabe is basically now just openly murdering dissenters.
Or – alternatively – they could keep attacking Israel and trying to funnel money to Hamas. Go with what you’re good at, I guess.
