Whatever. They trot this out every election season. It’s an election season. Ergo:
Turki al-Faisal, the former Saudi intelligence director and a member of the royal family, presented a proposal for Israeli-Palestinian peace at a conference yesterday. Arab, Palestinian and Israeli political figures attended the conference, organized by the Oxford Research Group, which seeks to promote the Saudi Peace Initiative of 2002. Al-Faisal, who heads the King Faisal Center for Research and Islamic Studies, expressed the kingdom’s support for a comprehensive peace and the rights of the Palestinian people.
I’m being a little unfair because al-Faisal has actually been pushing this a while and of the various Saudi princes he’s among the less excerable. But personal intentions aside, the Saudi Plan’s insistence on the “rights of the Palestinian people” is an insistence on the right to overrun and destroy Israel. So shockingly the Israelis are saying thanks but no thanks. I’m thinking that the cool Israeli reception is about 80 percent not wanting to be destroyed and about 20 percent thinking that the Saudis – known for leaving their ear phones out at peace conferences – don’t come off as particularly sincere.
I’m not even sure why the Saudis bothered this time. It’s not like they’re going to have problems with the incoming Obama administration’s approach to Israel.
