A spokeswoman for Rep. Tom Lantos of California says the congressman has died. Spokeswoman Lynne Weill said Monday morning that the 80-year-old Lantos, the only survivor of the Holocaust to serve in Congress, died at Bethesda Naval Medical Center. Lantos, a Democrat who chaired the House Foreign Affairs Committee, disclosed last month that he had been diagnosed with cancer of the esophagus.
Lantos, despite being the farthest thing from a foreign policy hardliner, was regularly branded a dual loyalty “neoconservative” by seething anti-Israel activists. There was apparently something about him that they hated so much that they overlooked what he actually believed while they snarled viciously and defended themselves as merely “anti-Zionist.” He, of course, knew exactly what that was.
