Feminist Magazine MS To Powerful Israeli Women: Sorry, You’re Too Jewish To Be In Our Magazine

Wow. Just wow:

Jewish leaders are reeling after what they say was a decision by Ms. magazine to refuse to accept a full-page advertisement featuring three prominent Israeli women. The advertisement, submitted to the feminist publication by the American Jewish Congress, featured photographs of three women who hold leadership positions in Israel, including the president of the Israeli Supreme Court, Dorit Beinisch; Israel’s foreign minister, Tzipi Livni, and speaker of the Knesset, Dalia Itzik. Underneath the photographs, the advertisement included the text, “This is Israel.”…

“For a magazine that I believe has stood for empowerment and supporting women in high positions of society, it was just stunning,” the group’s president, Richard Gordon, said. “Clearly, there is an anti-Israel sentiment here that is being exhibited, because there is no other possible rationale for making a decision like this.” The magazine’s executive editor, Kathy Spillar, offered a different reason in an interview with the Jewish Telegraphic Agency. She said that because two of the women photographed belong to the same political party, the advertisement showed favoritism… The director of the American Jewish Congress’ Commission for Women’s Empowerment, Harriet Kurlander, said a representative from the magazine told her the advertisement was too controversial and was likely to “cause a lot of opposition.”

That’s their argument? Really? That they couldn’t print it because the speaker of the Knesset and the Foreign Minister are from the same party? This is like saying that they can’t print a picture of Hillary Clinton standing next to Nancy Pelosi. That’s the point – that the party that controls Israel has powerful women across executive and legislative leadership positions. As it so happens, women are also at the top of Israel’s scientific and economic ladders – and, while we’re talking about liberation, that’s not all they’re on top of. But an ad celebrating Israel’s diversity and freedom would “cause a lot of opposition” in a leftist feminist magazine – because two of the women are from the same party. Right.

We’d ask about the actual basis for the leftist opposition to Israel – especially in the context of feminism – but we don’t want to be accused of “using anti-Semitism” to “silence legitimate criticism of Israel.” Still, we’d be interested to hear what that legitimate feminist criticism of Israel might look like, since our hunch is that it falls into the usual category of “they don’t hate Israel because they believe anti-Israel lies; they believe anti-Israel lies because they already hate the Jewish State for other reasons.”

And let’s say that all of the anti-Israel lies are true – shouldn’t feminists still be supporting Israel in spite of them, on account of the overwhelming net positives in the specific area of feminism? Or does being a female citizen of the Jewish State now automatically outweigh all over considerations?

While this isn’t the first time that the American feminist left has choosen the wrong side in the global battle for eagalitarianism and equality, it’s undoubtedly one of the dumbest.
