The Israeli Initiative offers a moral, practical, and simple formula for the long-term solution of the Israeli-Arab conflict. The three main tenets of the Israeli Initiative are:
- A humanitarian solution to the refugee problem that will rehabilitate the Palestinian refugees.
- A regional solution that relies on strategic cooperation with Jordan.
- The extension of Israeli sovereignty throughout all of Judea and Samaria.Through these basic principles, I believe that we will not only stabilize the situation in Israel, but we actually create a real peace partner for the future. Rather than suggesting a political solution that only perpetuates the struggle, violence and poverty of the Palestinians, the Israeli Initiative proposes a humanitarian solution. It provides Palestinian refugees with the means to start over. It restores their dignity and offers them hope for the future.
A solution to the refugee problem must be a major component of any settlement. Israel must make every effort to finally solve the problem of the refugees of 1948, and demand the international community play an active role. UNRWA must be dismantled and a generous compensation program should be offered to all Palestinians.… Israel, the US, Europe and Arab oil producing countries, can directly finance a program that would provide full and generous rehabilitation for the refugees… This humanitarian solution can right a wrong that has been perpetuated against the Palestinian people since the creation of the “refuge problem” by the Arab world, UNRWA and the PA.
Why it’ll never pass after the jump.
The Arab states have intentionally locked the Palestinian camps into massive poverty and deprivation so that they can use the resulting unrest to pressure Israel. That’s a truism pretty much across the political spectrum, certainly from the Israeli far right all the way to the center left. There’s still the core hard left that blames everything on Israel no matter what, but it’s hard to argue with “umm… Israel gave citizenship to 600,000 Jews who were expelled from Arab countries and the Arab countries refused to grant citizenship to the 600,000 Arabs who flooded across their borders.” That kind of brute fact tends to impose constraints on even leftist style denial. Brazil is literally more welcoming when it comes to granting citizenship than the Arab brothers and sisters of the fourth and fifth generation Palestinian “refugees”.
It’s also hard to argue with the UN’s demonstrable history of breeding extremism in the camps that they run. They have been caught funding vicious anti-Israel propaganda and employing Hamas members before it was internationally fashionable to appease those terrorists. They have even been tagged for directly funding terrorists.
But suddenly everyone is going to give up five decades of ingrained anti-Israel policies because an Israeli rightist wants to turn what passes for Palestinian society into a functioning culture? We’re not holding our breath. But if you have a historical interest in failed Israeli-Arab peace initiatives, the Israel Initiative’s page is reasonably slick.
