Stories that are either too frustrating or too small to do full posts on:
* Libya wins seat on U.N. Security Council – No worries, we’re sure that Libya will totally change its official policy of not recognizing a UN member state now that it’s been elected to a role of importance. That’s always how engagement works.
* Powell says Iran’s nuclear row can be resolved diplomatically – No worries, we’re sure that Iran will totally stop uranium enrichment – which Khamenei just told Putin they wouldn’t – if they’re shown that the West really likes them. That’s always how engagement works.
* Blair proposes tripartite cmte. to monitor progress of PA reforms – No worries, we’re sure that the Palestinians will totally stop trying to kill Israelis if Israel does something like withdraw from the Gaza Strip. That’s always how etc etc. Screw it.
* Did you know that Arabs were committing anti-Jewish pogroms in British mandate Palestine decades before Israel was founded?
By the time Yosef Ezra was four years old, his family was the only Jewish family still in Hebron following the 1929 massacre. They left only in 1947, a day after the UN voted to establish the state of Israel. He still has clear memories of his 15 years in the city. Today, Ezra is 75 and lives in Jerusalem. But he still has registration documents for the Hebron lands and houses owned by both his family and Magen Avot, an umbrella organization of Sephardi yeshivas in the city.
Notice how he’s not blowing up Palestinian civilians while hysterically shrieking that he deserves a Right of Return?
* Another Hollywood idiot
