AQ In Iraq Leader Abu Ayyub al-Masri Dead?

Hmmm… wonder what people are going to be talking about this morning:

Unconfirmed reports that al Qaeda in Iraq leader Abu Ayyub al-Masri has been killed come from local tribes and not Iraq’s intelligence services or military, an Iraqi government spokesman said Tuesday. Ali al-Dabbagh, spokesman for Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki, said the government won’t be able to confirm al-Masri’s death until it makes an identification of the body.

No real details yet, and if the past is any indication this is going to quickly lead to a disappointing afternoon. But for what it’s worth, here’s K-LO breaking the news, Jawa’s hope against hope celebration, and PJM’s roundup.

Robert Spencer is also up a little early this morning, and has some background that it would behoove you to read about red on red violence.
