Countdown To EU Appeasment Of Hamas

Last September, the EU committed to not funding the Palestinians until they explicitly recognized Israel’s right to exist. This was seen as fair because the only reason the Palestinians get funds anyway is because they promised to recognize Israel back during the Oslo years. Nonetheless, we guessed that this commitment would turn out to be a lie.

Then in February, Britain went even further and said that even a Palestinian unity government would still have to recognize Israel to get funds. We were, again, skeptical.

Here’s the best assessment from Israeli intelligence on the issue, as of this weekend:

“The establishment of the (Palestinian) unity government may reduce the economic pressure on Hamas, particularly by the moderate part of the European Union,” Shin Bet Chief Yuval Diskin said Sunday. Diskin told the cabinet meeting that “this week about $20 million were paid in salaries by the Palestinian Authority, some of the sum finances by the Palestinian president’s office and the Finance Ministry. These were not funds transferred by Israel .

This is where we’d gloat about how we were right and all those other bloggers – who thought that Europe could be trusted not to sell out Israel – were wrong. Except there were no other bloggers like that, because you’d basically have to be a comatose illiterate to be that stupid. And comatose illiterates, you see, can’t blog.
