Memo To the Guardian: One Of These Fundamentalists Is Not Like The Other

Richard Dawkins is an insufferable douchebag who understands neither the psychological terrain or the theoretical playing field that he’s on. He seems to have very little exposure to any literature about how ideology or belief work, and his insistence on leveling different religious devotion is sloppy thinking at its worst. He’s not even a very good polemicist.

But he’s not as bad as terrorists who blow up subways:

“We are witnessing a social phenomenon that is about fundamentalism,” says Colin Slee, the Dean of Southwark. “Atheists like the Richard Dawkins of this world are just as fundamentalist as the people setting off bombs on the tube, the hardline settlers on the West Bank and the anti-gay bigots of the Church of England. Most of them would regard each other as destined to fry in hell.

You think that “hardline settlers in the West Bank” think that the “anti-gay bigots of the Churcch of England’ are going to hell? Really? Or for that matter, you think the atheist Richard Dawkins thinks anybody is going to hell (answer: by definition, no). And that’s before we even get to that other salient difference between these different kinds of fundamentalisms: that sticky mass murder wicket.

The problem is not fundamentalism.
