Give that regime a bomb!
How is this different from when the US and Israel warn of escalating tensions? Why aren’t the lefties right when they talk about mutual escalation, cycles of violence, etc? The answer is essentially what Prime Minister Olmert said in that interview where he slipped up and described Israel as a nuclear power: there is simply a difference between responsible liberal states and irresponsible rogue regimes.
The US and Israel have had nuclear weapons for decades and have not used them. Israel, in fact, has repeatedly declared that it will never be the first to introduce nuclear weapons into the Middle East. Iran, on the other hand, has repeatedly declared that it intends to use nuclear weapons to wipe Israel off the map. Memo to lefties: save the forwards of your archived Juan Cole posts. Even if your creative reinterpretations of Ahmednejad’s threats are true – and they’re not – Rafsanjani openly called for destroying Israel with Iranian nukes. And he’s supposedly the moderate one. So that’s one of many, many differences between Israel and Iran – and it’s why when Iran talks about the tensions that it’s producing breaking out into the war that it’s starting, it’s a declaration of intentions and not a description of the situation.
