UCLA Gets Our Identity Stolen

Not to date ourselves, but we applied to UCLA almost a decade ago. Not only have they been keeping our records, but they’ve been keeping them in a place so secure that they just got stolen. We could not be more psyched about this email:

UCLA computer administrators have discovered that a restricted campus database containing certain personal information has been illegally accessed by a sophisticated computer hacker. This database contains certain personal information about UCLA’s current and some former students, faculty and staff, some student applicants and some parents of students or applicants who applied for financial aid… I regret having to inform you that your name is in the database… The information stored on the affected database includes names and Social Security numbers, dates of birth, home addresses and contact information… an unauthorized person exploited a previously undetected software flaw and fraudulently accessed the database between October 2005 and November 2006.

“Sophisticated computer hacker”. Give us a break. Some work study with an IQ of 90 probably got socially engineered by a 14 year old script kiddie with a prepaid cell phone plan. And it took them over a year to detect the exploit? Are you kidding? And what the hell was UCLA doing keeping decade-old records on a computer anyway?

The LA Times puts the number of records compromised at 800,000. Awesome. Just awesome. We could not be more happy with life right now.
