As it was during the Iran Revolution (aka the rather brief period of time when Jimmy Carter managed to lose Iran to political Islam), the veil is becoming a symbol of all the worst sorts of degrading theocratic commitments. How is the current celebration of veils different then what happened then? This time, it has its own stupid multiculturalist “empowerment” spin:
Relativism at its best – if you like it, then it must be empowering. No analysis. No thinking. Just unblinking de facto narcissism. Yesterday it was apologies in Michigan. This time it’s an alternative / attack on one of the most visible markers of traditional British Christianity. It’s not disturbing because the Queen’s speech on Christmas is of any theological or political significance – but it’s one of those quotidian things that make up the experience of being a modern British subject. Interesting – and revelatory – to see that political Islamists are targeting it with an alternative.
