What’s Missing from Liberal Haggadahs?

This snarky two-minute Haggadah from Slate’s Michael Rubiner is far less pretentious than the one at the Reconstructionist progressive second-night Seder that we were dragged privileged to attend last week. But both are alike in a very notable omission that they share – a recurring reality of the Jewish experience that many sophisticated thinkers seem literally determined to ignore. It has never really been an exaggeration, and, given Ahmadinejad’s rhetoric this weekend, it is frighteningly relevant today:

In each and every generation they rise up against us to destroy us. And The Holy One, blessed be He, rescues us from their hands.
